Levels of Care
Below are the NADSA (National Adult Day Services Association) and MADSA-approved levels of care. Not all programs provide all levels of care.
Level 1: Core Services
This level of adult day services provides:
- Some supervision.
- Socialization.
- Minimal assistance with activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, or using the toilet.
A person might be well-served by level 1 day services if they:
- Have physical problems which are stable at this time. (He or she does not need nursing assistance.)
- Are forgetful or mildly confused, but is easily redirected and reassured.
- Have some cognitive impairment, but is able to verbally or nonverbally communicate personal needs.
Level 2: Enhanced Services
This level of adult day services provides moderate assistance, including:
- Monitoring by a nurse.
- Therapy services at a maintenance level.
- Moderate assistance with one to three activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, or using the toilet.
A person might be well-served by level 2 day services if they:
- Have difficulties communicating or making appropriate decisions.
- Demonstrate occasional disruptive behaviors that call for increased staff time or skills.
Level 3: Intensive Services
This level of adult day services provides maximum assistance including:
- Regular monitoring or intervention by a nurse due to unstable conditions.
- Rehabilitative therapy services.
- Total care in one or more activities of daily living such as dressing, using the toilet, and eating.
- Moderate assistance with more than three activities of daily living at the center.
- Two staff to transfer to a chair, toilet, or bed.
A person might be well-served by level 3 day services if they:
- Are unable to communicate their needs.
- Display behavior that requires frequent staff intervention or support (require intensive staff time and skills).
